PupBox vs. BarkBox

Dog chewing on dog toyAre you debating whether to sign up for PupBox or BarkBox? Learn some of the key differences between these popular dog subscription box services.

PupBox

PupBox is a monthly subscription service that will change as your puppy grows and offers toys, treats and training guides customized for your puppy. While PupBox caters to puppies, they do also offer boxes for adult dogs.  In each box, you’ll get:

  • Useful Training Resources
  • Treats
  • Toys
  • Chews
  • Useful Grooming/Cleaning Accessories

Each box includes 5-7 products, including 1 bag of training treats (made in the U.S.) plus 4-6 additional products that are chosen based on the age and physical characteristics of your dog.  Please see my infographic below with further details on this service such as cost, shipping policies, payment methods, returns, cancellation, and more.

The unique thing about PupBox is, unlike most of its competitors, they offer valuable training information based on the age of your dog. This training can be invaluable since raising a small, energetic puppy is challenging for even experienced dog owners, let alone, new puppy parents. Puppies are prone to pick up and chew on absolutely anything left out (pens, electrical cords, even house walls aren’t safe) when they aren’t trying to crawl into dangerous spots.

This devoted training material is probably just as valuable as any toy or treat since the training helps to guide owners through exact steps they need to take in order to raise their little one in the best way possible.

Is the Training Material Worth It?

If you are a new puppy owner and have never raised a puppy before and feel completely lost, the material PupBox provides is easily worth your investment. You’ll learn things like:

  • How to’s of Crate Training
  • Teaching Puppy to Come on Command/Recall
  • Visual/Hand Gestures/Commands
  • Potty Training
  • Puppy Proofing Your Home

Again, each monthly delivery will contain information specific to your puppy at his/her stage of development. A new puppy owner, by himself, would be completely lost, so this information could be invaluable. For example, new dog owners might not even consider crate training, have no idea why it is important for potty training as well as safety, and have no clue how to go about it properly even if they did. Not even considering the safety issue, don’t get started on the extra money you’ll spend replacing phone chargers and other power cords if you don’t bother ‘proofing’ your pup’s living spaces.

For an experienced dog lover, someone who has raised several puppies in the past and learned from these mistakes, the material might not be as useful. And, of course, anyone with access to the internet can find it all free online. Then again, they’ll not only have to know exactly where to look and exactly what to look for, they’ll have to be able to understand and execute the proper methods once they find it.

BarkBox

Like PupBox, BarkBox delivers a unique monthly box with entertaining treats, toys and chews that your dog should love. All treats are made in either the U.S. or Canada. Each box is based on a unique theme, so that each month you will receive items different from anything in the past or future. Owners can further specify their desires by working with BarkBox customer service if their dog is not happy with some of the products.  Additionally, you can choose toys for a small, medium, or large dog for further customization.

If you have a powerful breed and destructive chewer, for an additional cost, you can specifically request items that will stand up to each heavy assault your dog dishes out. BarkBox doesn’t ship out flimsy stuffed animals that your dog might shred in a couple minutes or less, as long as you specifically request toys for a heavy chewer. On the flip side, you can have the same appropriate toys delivered for a light chewer or small breed.

Basic Box (without any customizations):

  • 2 high quality toys
  • 2 full-size bags of treats
  • A chew each month

While you do get more product with PupBox, you will also pay a higher price than BarkBox.

Conclusion: Which is Better?

For the puppy owner comparing these two, you’ll probably get more out of PupBox than you would with BarkBox. The training a puppy receives is invaluable, and can often impact lifelong development; any first time puppy owner should put a lot of effort into learning as much as they can about how to do it right. PupBox could save countless confusing hours of online research!

For an older adolescent or adult dog, BarkBox is probably the better choice and also more affordable. Both providers are fantastic; it’s all about what exactly an owner is looking for.  Check out BarkBox free bonuses here. I get a small commission if you sign up.
