      What is CBD Oil?

CBD, aka cannabidiol, is a compound in hemp plants that’s been shown to have various medical benefits. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which includes receptors found in the brain and throughout the body.

It’s a natural compound made from hemp, and can be used to help alleviate pain and other health problems in dogs without the side effects that come with typical medications.

The number of pet owners using CBD has grown significantly in recent years.

Since CBD products are regulated to have less than 0.3% THC, you can use CBD oil for your dog without any psychoactive side effects.

CBD also has numerous health benefits that can balance your dog’s endocannabinoid system and improve health. It’s been found to help dogs in several different ways, including:

      • Alleviating anxiety and stress
      • Improving mobility
      • Reducing joint pain and inflammation
      • Pain management
      • Reducing seasonal allergies
      • Improving digestion

While research and testing are still limited, pet owners are finding that CBD oil is a great option for their pet’s health problems and the aging process.

How to Choose the Finest Cannabidiol for Canined (Considerations)

how to choose the best CBD for dogs

      Types of Cannabidiol extract

CBD can be extracted in several ways. Here are the three main types of CBD extracts:

      1. Full-Spectrum – Full-spectrum contains all of the natural chemicals of the cannabis plant including a full profile of cannabinoids and terpenes. It’s also referred to as whole-plant CBD and isn’t changed chemically before purchase. There can from 80 to 120 cannabinoids and compounds within the cannabis plant.

While full-spectrum does contain THC, it should be safe for your dog based on the small quantity of THC present in hemp (less than 0.3 percent).

Due to the full profile of compounds being present, CBD’s effects are said to be stronger aka the entourage effect. These additional compounds each have their own potential benefits as well, so may be more effective with all being present.

While many brands claim their product is full-spectrum, you’ll want to check their certificate of analysis to look at the actual levels of cannabinoids present. These levels can be affected by the plant strain and extraction method.

      2. Broad-Spectrum – Broad-spectrum contains several cannabis compounds just like full-spectrum, except without the THC. By extracting the CBD without THC, there is some loss of the other compounds, but not completely.

You may get milder effects when compared to full-spectrum, but if you’re looking for no THC, then broad-spectrum may be the way to go. Both broad-spectrum and full-spectrum are predominately on my list of best CBD oil for dogs due to these other beneficial ingredients which work with CBD.

      3. CBD Isolate – This type contains simply CBD without any other compounds. The other parts of the hemp are completely separated.

The downside is that you lose the entourage effect of combining the CBD with other helpful compounds to increase its effectiveness.

One benefit is that CBD isolate is often less expensive and may have a milder flavor for fussy dogs.

Different Forms of the Finest Cannabidiol for Canines

CBD for dogs comes in many different forms such as oils, edibles (such as soft or hard treats), and topical creams. The oils can be placed inside food or under your dog’s tongue, while the edibles can be chewed like a regular treat. The topical creams can be rubbed on their skin and may be good for rashes, allergies, and aches and pains.

      Determining the Correct Dosage

Dog taking essential oil from dropper. Nutritional supplements,

Because CBD has only been legal since 2018, there are no clear guidelines yet on the correct dosage of CBD for dogs. You’ll see a wide variety of recommendations from each manufacturer on the correct CBD dosage and how to administer the product. Many vets also cannot give advice on CBD due to regulations in their state.

It’s important to consider your dog’s size and weight when determining the proper dosage. Giving a pet the incorrect dosage can have adverse effects and should be avoided.

A general rule of thumb is to begin with a dosage of 1-2mg for every 10 pounds of your dog’s weight, and increase over time if not seeing results. However, the dosage will also depend on the condition that is being treated. For example, a more serious health issue like seizures may require a much higher amount of CBD versus a lower dose for anxiety. Remember that the dosage of CBD listed on the bottle is different from the per-dose amount.

If you’re unsure of what to do, or if your pet has a pre-existing condition, check with your vet before giving your pet any CBD products. Make sure to also check with your veterinarian if your pet is on any medication prior to administering CBD oil. It may affect the metabolism of other drugs.

Often, CBD oil works in as quickly as thirty minutes for issues like anxiety. However, results may take up to four to six hours to occur. For issues such as chronic pain, the effects may take several weeks to work for your pet. Always keep an eye on them once you’ve administered CBD oil.

      Cannabidiol Lube vs. Treats

While CBD oils and treats can both provide benefits to your dog, they also have differences. CBD dog oil is usually faster acting, better absorbed, easier to adjust the dosage, and usually cheaper per mg of CBD oil.

On the other hand, CBD dog treats may be easier to feed to your dog, offer more choices of flavor, may last longer due to longer digestion, and take away any human error in measuring the dosage.

      Types of Carrier Oils

Since CBD is fat-soluble, it’s mixed with certain oils (called a carrier oil) to increase the CBD’s absorption in a dog’s body. Some of the most popular carrier oils are hemp seed oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and MCT oil.

Hemp seed oil offers additional health benefits as well since it contains antioxidants and amino acids, plus omega vitamins. I compare hemp seed oil vs CBD oil for dogs in another article.

MCT oil, also known as medium-chain triglycerides, often comes from coconut or palm kernels. Some users report that their dogs experience stomach issues from MCT oil.

Types of Extraction Methods for Cannabidiol

CBD can be extracted in several ways. These are the three most common extraction methods:

      CO2 Extraction

This is the most popular method of CBD extraction, but it also tends to be the most expensive method. In this method, three chambers are set up.

In the first chamber, CO2 gas is converted to a liquid by lowering the temperature and increasing the pressure in the chamber. Then, the temperature and pressure are slowly increased until the carbon dioxide reaches an in-between state with properties of both gas and liquid.

This in-between carbon dioxide is passed into the next chamber where it interacts with the raw plant material, separating the oils.

From there, the oils and CO2 are pumped into the third chamber, where the CO2 evaporates, leaving only the CBD oil behind.

      Extraction by Solvent

In this method, the plant trimmings are soaked in a solvent like food-grade ethanol or hydrocarbon until the cannabinoids are drawn out. Then, the mixture is further refined by evaporating solvent to leave behind a concentrated oil.

This method is efficient but does run the risk of the solvent not evaporating completely. If some of the solvent was still left in the CBD oil, this information is available on the Certificate of Analysis.

HempMy Pet stands by and uses this method effectively where no solvent residue remains.

      Steam Distillation

This method is similar to solvent extraction but uses steam instead of solvent.

Two distillation tanks are set up: one tank with the plant material that’s connected to another tank with water in it. The plant material tank is also connected to a condensing tube that leads to a collecting flask.

The water is heated until it reaches a boil. The steam this creates travels into the plant material tank, and the steam frees the cannabinoids and creates a vapor. The vapor travels through the condensing tube which separates it into oil and water in the collective flask.

The water is then further distilled to separate the CBD oil.

What are the Side Effects of Cannabidiol Lube for Canines?

While there are many encouraging benefits, there are also possible side effects that you should be aware of to make an informed decision. It’s important to note that there are limited studies on CBD usage, so many of these side effects are based on anecdotal evidence.

Potential side effects of CBD oil include:

      • Dry mouth: Research shows that CBD oil can decrease the production of saliva and increase thirst for your dog.
      • Blood pressure drop: High doses of CBD have shown a temporary drop in blood pressure which leads to light-headedness.
      • Drowsiness: If you’re using CBD oil to treat anxiety, the calming effect can cause drowsiness.
      • Diarrhea: Anytime you change your dog’s diet or give them something new to consume, it can cause an upset stomach.
      • Vomiting: As with diarrhea, changes in your dog’s diet can cause vomiting as well.
      • Changes in liver enzyme values: Some studies have shown an increase in SAP, a specific liver enzyme.
      • Medication interactions: Always talk with your vet before you introduce CBD oil because it can interact with your dog’s current medication.

Does Cannabidiol Lube Work for Canines with Arthritis?

While there are limited research studies, those that have been done, as well as anecdotal evidence, show that CBD oil has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

CBD oil cannot cure your dog’s arthritis, but it can be helpful to manage pain and inflammation, allowing your dog to be more comfortable and active.

Studies have shown that CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system. This system features receptors, transmitters, and enzymes in the central and peripheral nervous system, gut, and skin. It helps regular many things in your dog’s body, including pain and inflammation.

CBD interacts with the receptors in your dog’s endocannabinoid system to affect their pain and inflammatory response, helping to reduce pain and swelling in your dog’s joints.

In a recent study published in the Pain journal, a small research program at Baylor College of Medicine found that dogs who took higher doses of CBD saw significant improvements in their mobility and quality of life.

What Do Veterinarians Think About Cannabidiol for Canines?

Because there have been very few studies on the veterinary usage of CBD oil and there are currently no guidelines from the FDA on its safe usage for dogs, most vets will urge caution around CBD products.

Everything your vet knows about CBD oils is from anecdotal evidence, and it’s likely that they have little experience with its usage or side effects for your dog.

The conversation around CBD is changing every day, however, and many vets have seen the benefits of CBD oil firsthand.

According to Dr. Catherine Ashe, DVM, the American Veterinary Medical Association is “actively encouraging well-controlled studies into the uses of cannabinoids at this time.”

If you’re interested in using CBD for your dog, it’s always worth having a conversation with your vet first.

Is Cannabidiol Lube for Canines and Humans the Same?

In most cases, there’s no difference in the way that CBD oil is manufactured for both dogs and humans. The main difference between the two comes down to flavorings.

For pets, CBD oil can contain pet-safe flavorings that make them more enticing to pets, like cod liver oil extract or bacon flavoring.

In human CBD oil, these flavorings would differ and could potentially contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs, like xylitol or essential oils. Some human CBD oils also contain THC, which should never be in your dog’s CBD oil.

The packaging requirements for human CBD oil also differ. The FDA has strict packaging guidelines for all human drugs, food, and dietary supplements, but products for animals don’t meet these same restrictions.

Always check the ingredients on any CBD oil before giving it to your dog and use our vetted recommendations for dog-safe options.

My dog was having several severe seizures a month. My vet wanted to put him on pharmaceutical drugs. I did a lot of research and I decided not to put my dog on pharmaceutical drugs because of the side effects both present and long term. I started him on a full spectrum Cbd oil. There was a very noticeable improvement in a very short time period. He was having fewer seizures and they were shorter and less severe. And at the onset of a seizure I would massage a couple of drops on his gums and the seizure was over within seconds. He has been seizure free for over a year now and he is happy healthy and active and no nasty side effects 🙏🌸💙🐾
