What is Glucosamine?

In general, glucosamine is taken to help relieve joint pain, mostly from osteoarthritis, but other forms too.

Glucosamine is already naturally present in the bodies of both humans and dogs, but can also be taken in supplement form.

It’s meant to help support the health of your cartilage, which supports your joints. As we get older, cartilage begins to wear down, and there is less tissue to offer cushioning support between our bones/joints (same with dogs).

This would be especially beneficial in aging & elderly dogs, as those are the ones who will be the most likely to develop joint issues.

Overweight dogs are also prone to developing joint problems at an earlier age, since their joints will have to work harder supporting more than they are biologically meant to.

What is Chondroitin?

Chondroitin is another popular supplement for osteoarthritis, and is also already naturally occuring in the connective tissues of the body.

This is often supplemented along with glucosamine to treat arthritis.

Chondroitin can be found naturally in connective tissue, like the gristle on animal bones; wild dogs or wolves would already find it in their diets.

For our domestic pets, on the other hand- you’ll have to check to make sure the foods you provide contain it.

What is Osteoarthritis?

There are actually many different kinds of arthritis, but this is one of the more common forms.

Osteoarthritis is basically the wearing away of cartilage supporting bones and joints, sometimes actually leading the bones to rub against each other.

This causes pain, stiffness, and is extremely common among aging humans and dogs alike.

What about Grain Free Foods?

These days, there is a huge ‘grain free’ movement when it comes to dog food, but few people know exactly why that is important. In reality, things like grains, wheat, rice, corn or peas (etc.) aren’t exactly bad for your dog, and ‘grain free’ isn’t always better.

These things aren’t exactly good for your dog either; they simply aren’t needed.

The problem: Grains are much higher in starchy carbohydrates, which is the real problem with them.

Unlike humans, dogs have almost no need for carbs at all, their natural diet only consisting of about 15%.

With all these popular yet cheaply made dog food brands, today’s domesticated dog lives on a diet of about 40% carbs!

This means a whole lot of weight gain, increased chances of diabetes, and more joint problems.

Weight Management

When it comes to older dogs, or any dog for that matter, weight management and healthy nutrition is more important than supplementing for joint issues caused by too much weight.

You can’t treat poor joints if they are constantly supporting more than they are naturally meant to.

On top of that, overweight or obese dogs are much more likely to develop joint problems at an earlier age!
